Pregnant Elephant’s death triggers grief in Coimbatore

The death of a 50-year-old female elephant, which was carrying a 13-month-old foetus, has caused deep anguish among wildlife enthusiasts and raised serious questions about post-rescue monitoring by the Forest Department in Coimbatore.
The elephant was found dead in the Ettimadai Conservation Area of the Madukkarai Forest Reserve. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Wednesday under the supervision of District Forest Officer Jayaraj, during which officials discovered a female elephant foetus in the womb. The pregnancy was estimated to be around 13 months.
Forest Department officials said the elephant’s vital organs, including the heart, kidneys and liver, were found to be severely damaged. Preliminary findings also indicated that the animal had not consumed food for several weeks. Officials stated that the elephant likely died due to serious health complications related to pregnancy.
The death has drawn particular attention as the same elephant had been rescued just days earlier after getting stuck in slush in a private garden at Kuppanur near Thondamuthur. The Forest Department had carried out the rescue operation and released the animal back into the forest area.
Wildlife activists and conservationists have expressed shock over the incident, questioning whether adequate medical monitoring was carried out after the rescue. They have raised concerns over why the elephant’s deteriorating health condition and prolonged lack of feeding were not detected in time, especially given that it was pregnant.
The incident has renewed calls for stricter health surveillance and follow-up care for rescued wild animals, particularly vulnerable pregnant elephants, to prevent such tragic outcomes in the future.
