The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has sanctioned ₹1.16 crore for the renovation of the dilapidated Government Youth Hostel near Anna Stadium in Tiruchi.
The Youth Hostel, attached to the Mera Yuva Bharat – MY Bharat (formerly Nehru Yuva Kendra) office in Tiruchi, was shut during the pandemic and remain closed since 2021. The hostel was established to cater to the needs of students and sportspersons travelling to the city from various districts.
The 80-bed two-storey building that served both the athletes and students has been neglected for years and is in a dilapidated state due to poor maintenance.
Earlier, students who travel to Tiruchi from surrounding places to take part in sports competitions and academic events held at the Bharathidasan University and other colleges in the city, used to stay at the
hostel.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officials had inspected the structure and based on the inspection a proposal was submitted for renovation at a cost of ₹90.62 lakh. However, the Ministry had asked the officials to prune the estimate to less than ₹20 lakh following which a revised proposal was sent for ₹19.92 lakh.
In a recent order, the Union Minister of Youth Affairs sanctioned ₹1.83 crore for upgrade of the youth hostels at Bhiwani (Haryana), Tiruchi, and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).
The Tiruchi hostel has been allocated the maximum of ₹1.16 crore under the initiative while ₹36 lakh has been allocated to the hostel in Bhiwani and ₹30.60 lakh for the one at
Bhopal.
