2-Sovereign gold jewellery theft: elderly woman murdered in Coimbatore

An elderly woman was allegedly murdered for her two-sovereign gold jewellery at Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore district.
Police have arrested a woman who runs an idli shop in connection with the case.
Vijayalakshmi, an elderly resident of Kuniyamuthur, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence on September 15.
On receiving information, Kuniyamuthur police reached the spot, recovered the body and began an investigation.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the woman was allegedly killed while the accused attempted to steal the two-sovereign gold jewellery she was wearing.
Police suspect that the accused covered Vijayalakshmi’s mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm, resulting in suffocation and her death.
During the investigation, police recovered broken glass bangles near the body, leading them to suspect the involvement of a woman.
CCTV footage from the area was subsequently examined, based on which police identified a woman running an idli shop as being allegedly linked to the murder.
The woman, who had reportedly been absconding, was arrested by a special team of Kuniyamuthur police on Wednesday. She was taken to the police station for further interrogation.
