Tiruppur City Police seized 60 kilograms of banned gutkha products during a raid conducted in a residential locality under the Veerapandi Police Station limits and arrested two persons from northern states in connection with the illegal sale.
Police sources said the operation was carried out following a confidential tip-off received during inspections in the Nochipalayam area under the supervision of Tiruppur City Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepa Sathyan.
During the raid, police found gutkha products being sold from a roadside shop and detained Amul Kumar, 23, a native of Bihar, for inquiry.
Investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly smuggled gutkha products from Bengaluru and supplied them locally in Tiruppur.
Based on information obtained during interrogation, police conducted a search at a nearby line house in a residential locality where youths from northern states were residing.
Officials seized 60 kilograms of gutkha stock kept there for sale. Further inquiry revealed the involvement of Thaneswaran, 27, a native of Odisha, in the illegal trade.
Police arrested both the accused and launched further investigation into the supply network.
