A 23-year-old seven-month pregnant woman was allegedly murdered and her body was found stuffed in a sack and dumped into an agricultural well near Konganapuram in Salem district.
The deceased was identified as Kokila, daughter of Perakkavundar of Karungullan Vattam. The body was discovered after a foul smell emanated from a farm well belonging to Govindammal in the Thanakuttivalavu area near Konganapuram.
Passers-by noticed a white sack floating in the well and alerted the police. Police reached the spot, retrieved the sack and found the decomposed body of a woman inside.
Police identified the deceased as Kokila and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to the investigation details, Kokila had completed her college education and was staying at home. On August 20, she complained of severe abdominal pain and was taken by her family to a nearby government primary health centre. Medical examination revealed that she was seven months pregnant.
Her family reportedly learnt that she had been in a relationship with Ammasi, 26, from a neighbouring village. Following a complaint from Kokila’s family, police called Ammasi for an inquiry. He reportedly assured them that he would marry Kokila after the village festival and took her to his house until then.
On August 31, Ammasi reportedly informed Kokila’s family that she was missing. Despite searches in several places, she could not be traced. Her body was subsequently found in the well, causing shock among her family and local residents.
Konganapuram police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the murder.
