An eight-year-old female elephant was found dead at Murugan Estate in the private forest section of the Manambolly Forest Range under the Pollachi Forest Division of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
According to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, field staff spotted the carcass at Field No. 5 of the estate during routine patrol on July 15. A post-mortem examination was conducted on July 16 by Dr. T. Meiyarasan, Assistant Veterinary Surgeon, Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Pollachi, in the presence of the Deputy Director of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, the Manambolly Forest Range Officer and Ganesan, a volunteer with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF).
The post-mortem examination indicated that the elephant had suffered from ill health due to a digestive disorder, which was identified as the cause of death.
Samples collected from the carcass during the examination were sent for laboratory analysis. The elephant’s carcass was subsequently buried at the site in the presence of the team.
