Kavithalayam Music School has been promoting Bharatanatyam in Erode for the past 25 years, training thousands of students.
The renowned film director K. Balachander named his film production company Kavithalayam.
In his honor, Ramalingam from Erode created an arts division under the same name. Initially, he arranged for the people of Erode to enjoy a play or dance performance every month.
This gradually evolved into a music school. Bharatanatyam, Carnatic vocal music, painting, Veena, and Western dance are taught at the Erode Amman (formerly Hindu School) Matriculation School. Numerous students attend classes every Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
Special teachers from various government and private schools come to teach these arts.
Regarding this, Ramalingam said: “So far, more than 25 Arangetram (debut) performances have been conducted by the school.
Numerous students have learned Bharatanatyam. These arts are taught here at a very low fee of Rs. 200 per month in Erode.
Many students who studied here are now running their own dance schools. The quality of education here is the same as that offered in university Bharatanatyam courses. Certificates are also provided.”
Bharatanatyam teachers Akhila, who is married, works as a teacher here. Swetha works as an Assistant Professor of Fashion Technology at VIT IAS College.
Both of them are former students of this school. “It takes about 10 years to become fully proficient in Bharatanatyam. If there is interest, it can be learned easily.
All 12 Adavus (basic steps) are taught. This is followed by Salangai Pooja, Natyanjali, and Arangetram. Students can run their own dance schools and performances;
Bharatanatyam is also important for the film industry and television programs,” they said. Bharatanatyam teachers Devika and Lathika, students of RANM and Kongu Arts College respectively, said:
Bharatanatyam enhances a person’s memory and intellectual abilities. This will help them excel further in their studies.
They added that this art form can be considered a meditative practice involving the body, mind, and devotion.
