Acid attack on schoolgirl sparks protest in Maharashtra

A 13-year-old Class VI student was injured in an acid attack while returning home from school in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district, triggering protests by villagers demanding swift action against the accused.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Vatgaon Pan village when the girl was cycling back home from school.
According to police, a man on a two-wheeler intercepted her on the way, pretending to ask for directions. When she stopped, he allegedly threw acid on her face and fled the scene.
The girl sustained severe burn injuries and screamed for help before managing to return to her school.
Teachers rushed to her aid, administered first aid, and arranged for her immediate transfer to a government hospital in Loni. Hospital sources said the girl is undergoing treatment and her condition is currently stable.
The incident sparked outrage among villagers, who staged a road blockade on the Loni–Sangamner road, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and stringent punishment.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Officials said CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the village is being examined to identify and nab the suspect.
