AIADMK councillors staged a protest with chimney lamps at the Coimbatore Corporation Council meeting on Monday, condemning the failure of streetlights in several parts of the city.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor Ranganayaki, was adjourned for an hour following heated exchanges over resolutions.
Before the meeting began, AIADMK councillors held chimney lamps and alleged that streetlights were not functioning across parts of the city. They later entered the council hall carrying the lamps and raised questions about the issue.
DMK councillor Malathi remarked that the Legislative Assembly had once been “plunged into darkness”. In response, another DMK councillor said that “Tamil Nadu itself is in darkness”, triggering further exchanges between members.
Tensions escalated over the resolutions listed for discussion. Councillors reportedly said that only 36 agenda items had been circulated two days earlier, but more than 50 additional items were brought up for discussion at Monday’s meeting.
Opposing the move, East Zone Chairperson Lakshmi Ellanselvi threw the bundle containing the resolution papers. Subsequently, some councillors approached the Mayor’s chair and engaged in heated arguments.
As the disruption continued, the council meeting was adjourned for an hour.
