The hearing on the bail petition filed by former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi in an alleged bribery case has been adjourned to November 2 by the special court for corruption cases in Chennai.
Anbil Mahesh was arrested by the Chennai Central Crime Branch police in connection with allegations that around Rs. 100 crore was collected by promising to secure recognition for private schools. Following his arrest, he was questioned by the police for around three hours before being produced before the special court.
The court remanded him in judicial custody until November 6. He was subsequently lodged at Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai and allotted a first-class prison facility. In his bail petition, Anbil Mahesh denied the allegations, stating that there was no evidence to establish that he had accepted bribes. He also claimed that he had cooperated fully with the police whenever summoned for questioning. Citing his medical condition, he said he required continued medical monitoring and sought bail.
During Thursday’s hearing, the Central Crime Branch police sought additional time to file their response to the bail petition. The court consequently adjourned the matter to November 2. The hearing on the police plea seeking custody of Anbil Mahesh for interrogation has also been postponed to the same date.
