Andhra Pradesh Tops in Caesarean Deliveries, CM Chandrababu Naidu Voices Concern

The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday saw an important discussion on maternal health. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu raised concerns over the growing number of caesarean section deliveries in the state, noting that Andhra Pradesh ranks first in the country for such surgical births.

The Chief Minister warned against the misuse of surgical procedures, stressing that caesarean deliveries should be conducted only when medically necessary. “Having a child through surgery without medical reason is very dangerous,” Naidu said, calling on both doctors and families to exercise caution.

He criticised the increasing practice of scheduling surgeries based on superstition or convenience. “Some parents request surgery at an auspicious time, or for their own benefit. This is wrong. Surgery should not be guided by beliefs or timing—it should only be done if required for the safety of the mother or child,” he emphasised.

Health officials have repeatedly cautioned that unnecessary surgical deliveries carry risks, including long-term complications for mothers and newborns. The Chief Minister’s remarks are expected to spark renewed debate on regulating private healthcare practices and raising awareness about safe childbirth methods in the state.
