In a poignant act of love and courage, a woman from Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district broke tradition by performing the final rites of her mother-in-law — a gesture that left villagers deeply moved.
Adhilakshmi, a resident of the C.H. Kunne School area, had long endured the loss of both her husband and son. She lived with her daughter-in-law, Sridevi, and grandson, Bethil. Despite life’s hardships, Sridevi lovingly cared for her elderly mother-in-law until her last days.
A few days ago, Adhilakshmi passed away following an illness. With no male relatives remaining in the family to perform the funeral rituals, Sridevi, supported by local villagers, took it upon herself to conduct the rites — a rare act in the region’s traditional setting.
Sridevi and the villagers carried the body to the cremation ground. There, Sridevi performed all the final rituals with devotion and composure. Witnesses said tears welled up in their eyes as she lit the pyre, fulfilling her mother-in-law’s final journey with love and dignity.
The act has drawn widespread admiration, with many praising Sridevi’s compassion and strength in the face of convention. Villagers described the scene as “heartfelt and unforgettable,” a powerful testament to the enduring bond between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law.
