The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently released its heatwave forecast for the summer season spanning from April to May 2026. According to this forecast, temperatures across India are expected to be higher than usual. Specifically, it has been predicted that heatwave conditions in certain parts of North Tamil Nadu will be more intense than normal.
Furthermore, there is a possibility that Tamil Nadu may receive higher-than-normal rainfall during the month of April. While this may offer some degree of relief from the heat, it has also been indicated that the heatwave—characterized by temperatures exceeding normal levels—is likely to persist for an extended number of days.
Consequently, this is expected to lead to thermal stress; maximum temperatures across the state—both during the day and at night—are likely to remain abnormally high, exceeding seasonal norms. This will result in intensely hot conditions, accompanied by a reduction in the cooling effect typically experienced during the night. Overall, this April is projected to be a scorching month, hotter than usual. Even if intermittent showers occur, the discomfort caused by the heat is expected to persist.
It is essential to drink water frequently. One should regularly consume hydrating beverages such as water, tender coconut water, and fruit juices; these help maintain the body’s fluid balance. Consuming foods rich in water content—such as watermelon and cucumber—is also highly beneficial. Additionally, individuals who feel they are experiencing symptoms of dehydration should strictly avoid consuming tea, coffee, and soda.
Doctors have advised that children and the elderly should avoid venturing outdoors during the peak heat hours—typically between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Furthermore, those engaged in strenuous outdoor work must exercise extreme caution. The elderly and children, in particular, need to be extra careful; their caregivers must ensure that they are consuming adequate amounts of water. Only then can we ward off minor heat-related skin ailments in children, such as chickenpox and prickly heat.
Let us remain vigilant and protect ourselves from the onslaught of the heat!
