A beggar who died after a road accident in Alappuzha district was found to be carrying cash amounting to Rs. 4.5 lakh, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Anil Kishore, who was begging in the Sarumudu area of Alappuzha.
On Monday, he was hit by a scooter and was immediately rushed by locals to a nearby hospital. However, he reportedly left the hospital on his own later that night. The following morning, Anil Kishore was found dead on the veranda of a roadside shop in the same area.
Police were informed and reached the spot to conduct an inquiry.
During a search of his belongings, police found a large sum of cash. The money was counted in the presence of a representative of the Sarumudu area panchayat and was found to total Rs. 4.5 lakh.
Among the cash were 12 demonetised Rs. 2,000 currency notes. A small amount of Saudi riyals was also recovered. Police said the cash would be produced before the court as part of the legal procedure. Further investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death and the source of the money.
