A 28-year-old woman from Avalahalli near Talaghattapura, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, reportedly ended her life after facing continuous dowry harassment from her husband and in-laws. The tragic incident has once again highlighted the persistence of dowry-related abuse in urban areas.
The deceased, identified as Navya, was married to Sailesh, an engineer, about four years ago. Her parents had provided dowry during the marriage as demanded by the groom’s family. While the couple initially lived happily, police said that Sailesh and his family later began demanding additional dowry and allegedly subjected Navya to repeated harassment.
On the day of the incident, the family is said to have argued with Navya over dowry. Distraught and unable to bear the pressure, Navya reportedly went into her bedroom and hanged herself from the ceiling fan. Sailesh found her unconscious and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Following the incident, Navya’s parents filed a complaint against Sailesh and his family at the Talaghattapura Police Station. Police have registered a case under Sections 304B (dowry death) and 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives) of the Indian Penal Code, and an investigation is underway.
