BJP State Executive Committee member Vivegam Ramesh alleged that the Congress and other opposition parties were confusing the public by making baseless allegations against the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP office in Thoothukudi, he said the Election Commission was an independent constitutional body and alleged that repeated accusations against it could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
He claimed that the Congress and opposition parties were alleging that 13 crore voters had been removed through the SIR exercise and said protests were being held based on the claim.
Vivegam Ramesh said eligible voters had been included in the electoral rolls and ineligible names removed through the SIR process. He added that voters had been given opportunities to raise objections and file appeals regarding the inclusion or deletion of names.
He also alleged that the opposition parties were claiming that the Election Commission was supporting the BJP and acting against Scheduled Caste and minority communities. Such allegations, he said, could affect public confidence in elections and democracy.
The BJP’s position, he said, was that no eligible voter should be left out of the electoral roll and that ineligible voters should not be included.BJP District General Secretary A.M. Rajesh, District Media Wing President Jayakumar and East Zone President Shanmugasundaram were also present.
