A bluefin tuna was sold for a staggering Rs. 28 crore at the New Year auction held at the Toyosu Fish Market in Tokyo, setting a new record and drawing international attention.
The tuna, weighing 243 kg, was caught off the coast of Oma in Aomori Prefecture and is highly prized for its rich flavour and quality.
As part of the traditional New Year auction, there was intense competition among bidders to secure the premium catch.
The winning bid was made by Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of the renowned Sushi Zanmai restaurant chain.
The price far exceeded last year’s record of around Rs. 11 crore, making it one of the most expensive tuna ever sold at the auction.
The annual New Year tuna auction at the Toyosu Fish Market is regarded as a prestigious event in Japan’s seafood industry and is seen as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity for the year ahead.
