A five-year-old boy died after his neck was slashed by a kite string while he was riding a bicycle in a residential apartment complex in Surat city on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Rahanesh, son of Amol Borsi, a resident of the Jahangirpura area of Surat district in Gujarat. The incident occurred when the child was cycling with his friends within the apartment premises.
Police said a stray kite string hanging in the area suddenly came in contact with the boy’s neck, causing a deep cut and leaving him critically injured. Neighbours immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fatal injury was caused by a discarded kite string left behind after Makar Sankranti celebrations, which were observed across Gujarat on Thursday. Kite flying is a widespread practice during the festival, and sharp manja strings often remain unattended on roads and buildings.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation, while urging the public to ensure proper disposal of kite strings to prevent such tragic incidents.
