An eight-year-old girl from Coimbatore gave a new lease of life to seven persons after her parents consented to donate her organs following her declaration as brain dead.
S. Venbha, daughter of T. Santhosh, Chairman of the Town Planning Committee of Coimbatore Corporation and Ward 73 Councillor, and Suganya, collapsed on February 23 due to high blood pressure and a brain haemorrhage.
She was initially admitted to a nearby private hospital and later shifted to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital on Avanashi Road for advanced treatment.
Despite intensive care, doctors declared her brain dead on February 25. In a courageous decision amid grief, her parents agreed to donate her organs.
A team of multi-organ transplant surgeons harvested the liver, kidneys, eyes, bone and skin as per the guidelines of the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu.
The liver and one kidney were transplanted at KMCH, while another kidney, eyes, bone and skin were allocated to a private hospital in Coimbatore.
Hospital Chairman Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami lauded the family’s noble gesture, stating that the donation would inspire greater awareness about organ donation.
