The expanded breakfast scheme, renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme, will be launched in Virudhunagar on September 17 by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The scheme, originally introduced as the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, was launched during the previous DMK government for students of Classes 1 to 5 in government primary schools. It was later expanded to government-aided schools in urban and rural areas, benefiting around 19.34 lakh students.
The latest expansion will extend the scheme to students of Classes 6 to 8 in government and government-aided schools from September 17. The scheme has also been renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.
The expansion is expected to benefit an additional 15.14 lakh students. A total of Rs.343 crore has been earmarked for the scheme, with Rs.217 crore allocated in the 2026-27 financial year. The government order for the expansion was issued on July 22.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is scheduled to visit Virudhunagar on September 17 to launch the expanded scheme at K.V.S. Middle School, where Kamaraj studied. Preparations for the programme are underway.
