British-Era Silver Coins Unearthed at Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple in Barabanki

During construction work at the historic Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple (popularly known as Shri Lodheshwar Mahadev Dham) in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, 75 silver coins believed to date back to 1882 from the British Raj period were discovered.

According to reports, workers digging the temple foundation unearthed a clay pot containing more than 100 silver coins. Some of the coins were allegedly divided among the workers before the matter was reported to authorities. Locals then informed the police.

Revenue officials and police reached the site and recovered 75 coins, with efforts continuing to trace the missing ones. The area has since been sealed off to prevent further disturbance.

Speaking about the discovery, Associate Justice Gujita Agarwal said, “These coins appear to be from the British period. So far, 75 coins have been recovered. The Archaeological Department has been informed, and their team is conducting a detailed investigation at the temple site.”

Archaeologists noted that the coins are around 140 years old, calling the find an important historical record from the colonial era. The recovery has drawn curiosity among locals, with many considering it a significant moment for the temple’s heritage.
