In a tragic road accident, a brother and sister were killed after a speeding car hit their two-wheeler on the Marthandam flyover near the Christian College area on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Ramya (22), daughter of Vijayakumar, a native of Kanchiramkulam on the banks of the Neyyar River in Kerala, and her brother Ranjith Kumar. Ramya was working as a software engineer in an IT company in Marthandam.
On Monday morning, Ramya was travelling to her workplace on a bike along with her brother Ranjith Kumar. While they were crossing the Marthandam flyover, a speeding car rammed into their vehicle. Due to the impact, both were thrown nearly 50 feet down from the flyover into a residential compound beside the road.
Local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the critically injured siblings. They were taken to the Kuzhithurai Government Hospital, where Ranjith Kumar died on the way. Ramya was later shifted to the Asaripallam Government Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a short while later.
The car driver, identified as Vipin Joe, a resident of Marthandam, also sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to the Asaripallam Government Hospital for treatment.
The Marthandam police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident. Speed restriction warning boards have been placed on the flyover, but frequent violations by motorists continue to cause fatal accidents, police officials said.
