Three women pilgrims were killed on the spot after a car rammed into a group of devotees on foot pilgrimage near Ottapidaram in Thoothukudi district on Wednesday evening.
The victims were part of a large group from Veerapandianpattinam coastal village in Tiruchendur taluk who were undertaking a traditional foot pilgrimage from Tiruchendur to the Irukkankudi Mariamman Temple near Sattur in neighbouring Virudhunagar district.
The accident occurred on the four-lane Thoothukudi–Madurai National Highway when a car travelling from Thoothukudi towards Madurai hit the pilgrims as they were approaching a bridge near a junction.
Sundararani, aged 60, and Isakkiammal, aged 55, both residents of Veerapandianpattinam, and Kasturi, aged 55, from Karambavilai village, died instantly due to the
impact.
Ottapidaram police registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested the car driver, Ram Prasad, aged 32, a resident of the North Gate area of Thanjavur city. Further investigation is in
progress.
