Cauvery water released from Mettur Dam for samba cultivation in the delta districts reached Kallanai in Thanjavur district on Saturday.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay opened the Mettur Dam on September 1 for irrigation. The water released from the dam travelled through the Cauvery and reached Kallanai today.
Following this, water will be released from Kallanai at 11 a.m. on Sunday for samba cultivation in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and other delta districts.
Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister R. Vinoth is expected to inaugurate the water release. Delta farmers, district Collectors and legislators are also expected to participate in the
programme.
Water released from Kallanai through the Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anicut Canal is expected to provide irrigation facilities to around 16 lakh acres of agricultural land.
