Chennai corporation bans new Pitbull and Rottweiler purchases

The Greater Chennai Corporation Council on Thursday adopted a resolution banning the purchase and breeding of new Pitbull and Rottweiler breed dogs within the city limits.
According to the resolution, applications for pet licences to breed Pitbulls and Rottweilers will not be accepted with effect from Friday.
The civic body has also resolved to impose a penalty of Rs. 1 lakh on persons found illegally purchasing or breeding these dog breeds without obtaining a valid licence from the
Corporation.
The Council further made it mandatory for existing licensed Pitbull and Rottweiler dogs to wear collars and muzzles when taken out in public places.
Dog owners failing to comply with this regulation will be liable to a fine of Rs. 5,000, officials said.
The decision was taken in the interest of public safety and to strengthen regulation of aggressive dog breeds in the city.
