Chief Minister flags off double decker bus service

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday inaugurated the revived double-decker bus service in Chennai, bringing back the iconic mode of transport after an 18-year gap.
Double-decker buses were first introduced in Tamil Nadu in 1970 and operated in Chennai until the service was discontinued in 2007.
After a long hiatus, the State government decided to reintroduce the service, following which preparatory work was carried out in coordination with the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
As part of the first phase, a contract has been signed to procure 20 double-decker buses from Ashok Leyland.
In parallel, the Tourism Department has planned special double-decker services covering major tourist destinations in the city, with the objective of promoting tourism and offering passengers a panoramic view of Chennai.
In the initial stage, the Tourism Department has procured an air-conditioned electric double-decker bus from Ashok Leyland with financial support from Tamils living in the United States.
The red-coloured bus has been designed to showcase Tamil culture and heritage. It features images of the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur, the Marina Lighthouse, the Ripon Building and a Jallikattu bull tamer.
The slogan “Long Live Tamil” is prominently displayed on both sides of the bus. Officials said trial runs of the double-decker bus were completed successfully ahead of the launch.
After flagging off the service, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin travelled in the bus, during which officials explained the facilities and features available for passengers.
The return of the double-decker bus service has generated enthusiasm among the public, with both children and adults welcoming the revival of the popular service in Chennai. The government said the initiative would enhance the city’s transport experience while giving a boost to tourism.
