Following continuous downpours in Coimbatore and nearby Western Ghats, the Chunnambu Canal check dam near Athupalam has been opened after the Noyyal River overflowed due to heavy inflow.
The district has been receiving persistent rainfall for the past week, resulting in a sharp rise in water levels across rivers and canals. The Athupalam Chunnambu Canal witnessed flooding, prompting officials to release excess water to prevent damage to the structure.
Residents said that despite the strong current, some people were seen fishing near the overflowing canal. Locals have appealed to the authorities to deploy police patrols to prevent mishaps.
Officials have advised the public to stay away from canals and riverbanks until the water recedes, warning that rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the district.
