Chief Minister M K Stalin will launch the Pongal gift package distribution scheme in Chennai on January 8, under which rice family card holders across Tamil Nadu will receive Rs. 3,000 in cash along with essential Pongal provisions.
On the occasion of Pongal, the State government has announced that all rice family card holders will be provided with the traditional Pongal gift hamper and cash assistance. The gift package includes raw rice, sugar and sugarcane.
Officials said the rice and sugar required for the scheme have already been procured from warehouses of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, while the procurement of sugarcane is currently under way.
Distribution of the Pongal gifts will begin from January 8.
As part of the preparatory work, tokens are being issued to beneficiaries by fair price shop employees, who are visiting households and informing residents of the date and time for collecting the gift package.
Token distribution will continue until January 8. The Pongal gift packages will then be distributed at respective fair price shops from January 8 to January 13. Officials said the gifts can also be collected on Sunday.
The scheme is expected to benefit crores of families across the State and forms a key part of the government’s Pongal festival welfare measures.
