CM’s pongal gift scheme launched in Coimbatore

As part of the State-wide rollout of the Pongal gift scheme announced by Chief Minister M K Stalin, distribution of Pongal gift packages began in Coimbatore on Thursday.
A programme to distribute the gift sets was held at the Chintamani Cooperative Market Fair Price Shop in North Coimbatore. The event was inaugurated by Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar and Member of Parliament Ganapathy Rajkumar, in the presence of the Coimbatore Corporation Mayor, Deputy Mayor and senior officials.
Under the scheme, rice family card holders are being provided with a Pongal gift package comprising one kilogram of raw rice, one kilogram of sugar, a full-length sugarcane, a dhoti or saree, along with Rs. 3,000 in cash.
The initiative is aimed at enabling families to celebrate the harvest festival in a festive manner. In Coimbatore district alone, Pongal gift packages are being distributed to 11,22,290 family card holders through 1,540 fair price shops. Officials said the total value of the Pongal gift distribution in the district is Rs. 336.68 crore.
The State government has directed that the distribution be carried out smoothly across all districts, ensuring that every eligible beneficiary receives the Pongal gift package ahead of the festival.
