Contract Teachers Stir Enters Day 21 In Puducherry

The indefinite sit-in protest by 292 contract teachers in Puducherry demanding regularisation of services entered its 21st day on Wednesday, intensifying pressure on the territorial administration.
The agitation gained national attention with Narasimha Reddy, National President of the All India Teachers’ Federation, arriving from Andhra Pradesh to extend support. Addressing the protesters, he said the government must not ignore the legitimate demands of contract teachers and asserted that ensuring job security was its responsibility.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi also backed the agitation. Party State Deputy General Secretary Pavanan visited the protest venue and lauded the teachers for their sustained struggle. He urged the government to immediately safeguard the livelihood of teachers who have served for several years on contract.
The protesters reiterated their demand that all 292 teachers be regularised without conditions and that assurances given earlier by the government be honoured without delay.
With leaders from outside the Union Territory joining the stir and political parties extending support, the protest has gathered momentum. The teachers announced that they would stage a silent demonstration and take out a procession to submit a petition to the Lieutenant Governor, seeking swift intervention.
