A controversy has erupted in Karaikal after a video surfaced on social media allegedly showing a policeman misbehaving with a young woman during a late-night patrol at Karaikal Beach.
Following recent incidents of theft, harassment, and extortion reported near the beach area, the Karaikal District Police had intensified patrols and set up a temporary coastal police booth to ensure public safety.
According to sources, the incident occurred in September 2024, when a young couple visiting the beach was stopped by a patrol officer for questioning. The couple was reportedly taken to the police booth, where the officer allegedly sent the young man to buy water and then misbehaved with the woman.
The woman later informed her relatives, who rushed to the spot and confronted the policeman. A heated argument ensued, drawing public attention. The video of the confrontation quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage among residents and activists.
Social organizations and women’s rights groups have demanded strict disciplinary and legal action against the officer involved. In response, the Karaikal District Superintendent of Police has ordered an internal inquiry into the allegations and assured that appropriate action will be taken if misconduct is proven.
Authorities have also reinforced night patrols along Karaikal Beach and instructed officers to maintain public decorum and ensure safety for visitors.
