Three members of a family, including a two-and-a-half-year-old child, died in a fire accident at Kanniwakkam near Kuduvancheri in Chengalpattu district early on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Parthiban (33), his wife Jayachithra (29), and their daughter Jayashree.
According to police, the couple had returned home after work on Monday night and went to sleep. Due to heavy mosquito infestation in the area, they had lit a mosquito coil before going to bed.
During the night, the mosquito coil is suspected to have fallen on a flammable object, triggering a fire inside the house. The fire spread quickly and thick smoke filled the house, leading to suffocation.
Neighbours noticed smoke coming out of the house early in the morning and alerted the Maraimalainagar Fire and Rescue Services and the police.
Firefighters rushed to the spot, broke open the door and put out the fire. However, the couple and their child had already died in the incident.
The bodies were recovered and sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Kuduvancheri police have registered a case and are conducting further investigation into the incident.
