The Courtallam drizzle season is nearing its end as water inflow to the waterfalls has declined amid dry weather conditions in Tenkasi district.
Water flow has reduced in the Main Falls, Five Falls and Old Courtallam Falls. With the flow remaining low, the tourist crowd was moderate at Courtallam on Friday, despite it being a holiday.
The southwest monsoon normally brings drizzle to the Western Ghats areas of Tenkasi district from June to September. Rainfall in the catchment areas also contributes to the inflow into the district’s major reservoirs, including Kadana Nathi, Ramanathi, Karuppanathi, Adavinainar and Gundar.
While the southwest monsoon can bring the reservoirs to full capacity, rainfall has been inadequate this year. Only Gundar Reservoir has reached its full capacity.
Intermittent rain in the hill areas had caused the Courtallam waterfalls to gush for a few days. However, the rain did not continue, and dry weather prevailed thereafter.
The intensity of the daytime heat has increased over the past week, while dry winds have replaced the drizzle.With the drizzle season coming to an end, tourist footfall remained moderate. The reduced water flow in Five Falls, Main Falls, Chitraruvi, Puli Aruvi and Old Courtallam Falls disappointed visitors. Despite the heat, tourists continued to bathe in the cool water flowing from the waterfalls.
