Dengue treatment: Public can complain against private hospitals for excess charges

The Tamil Nadu Government has intensified measures to control the spread of dengue fever amid a rise in cases due to seasonal changes. More than 16,500 dengue cases have been reported in the State so far this year, with nine deaths reported.
The government has also established dedicated fever wards in government hospitals to provide treatment to patients based on the severity of their condition. Meanwhile, allegations have emerged that some private hospitals are charging excessive fees for dengue treatment. Patients are reportedly being charged between Rs. 22,000 and Rs. 75,000 a day in general wards, while treatment in intensive care units is reportedly costing up to Rs. 2 lakh a day. Public Health Department officials said complaints regarding excess charges at private hospitals would be investigated.
They said government hospitals currently have adequate beds and dedicated wards for fever patients. Patients arriving with fever are being assessed and provided treatment on a priority basis according to the severity of their condition.
Officials said legal action would be taken if private hospitals were found to be charging amounts significantly higher than their usual fees. If necessary, restrictions could also be imposed on such hospitals providing treatment for fever-related illnesses.
Members of the public can lodge complaints about excess charges at private hospitals by calling 104.
Officials also urged residents to identify and remove items around their homes and neighbourhoods where rainwater or clean water could stagnate and become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
