In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Coimbatore today witnessed the formation of India’s longest human chain for road safety. The event was organised jointly by the Coimbatore District Administration, City Police, and the NGO UYIR as part of the ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan’ campaign. The drive seeks to spread awareness on accident prevention and promote an accident-free week in the city this October.
A total of 10,000 participants, including student volunteers from UYIR Clubs, NGOs, industrial representatives, and members of academia, formed a massive 20-kilometre human chain across four major stretches in the city. The largest segment, covering 10 km from Anna Silai to Coimbatore Airport signal on Avinashi Road, was followed by a 5 km chain from Kuniyamuthur to Kovaipudur Pirivu on Palakkad Road, a 4.5 km chain from Rathinam College to Malumichampatti on Pollachi Road, and a 0.5 km chain from Cosmopolitan Club to Government Arts College along Race Course Road.
The campaign was inaugurated at Anna Silai by Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, along with Sivaguru Prabhakaran, IAS, Commissioner of Coimbatore City Corporation, Traffic Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar, and senior City Police officials. Dr. S. Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of UYIR Trust, trustees, and partner organisations also participated.
Organisers stated that ‘Naan Uyir Kavalan’ will continue with a series of awareness activities from October 6 to 12, aiming to reach wider sections of the public and strengthen the city’s commitment to road safety.
