In a gruesome double murder case, two elderly women were found dead in a quarry pond near Ilampillai–Thuthanoor in Salem district. Police later shot and arrested a man suspected to be behind the killings.
The victims, identified as Paavayi (70) and Periyammal (75), had gone missing on Tuesday. Their bodies were discovered floating in a stone quarry pond the next day, with jewelry missing from both, indicating murder for gain.
Following an intensive search, police traced the suspect, Ayyanar, who allegedly attempted to escape. Officers opened fire, injuring him in the leg before arresting him.
Forensic teams have recovered crucial evidence from the crime scene, and Salem district police are continuing their investigation under the supervision of senior officials.
