Dowry harassment drives newlywed to suicide

A tragic case of alleged dowry harassment has emerged from Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, where a 20-year-old newly married woman died by suicide barely eight weeks after her wedding, triggering shock and outrage in the region.
The deceased, Neha, a resident of the Aindampur area in Kushinagar district, was married to Vivek, 24, from the Dulhi area on November 22. Following the marriage, Neha went to live with her husband and in-laws at their residence in Dulhi.
According to police and family members, Neha was allegedly subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and his family soon after the wedding, with demands for additional dowry. Despite repeated efforts by her parents to pacify the situation, the harassment reportedly continued, leaving Neha mentally distressed.
On Sunday evening, Neha allegedly took her own life by hanging herself with her dupatta inside a room at her husband’s house. Family members noticed the incident and alerted the police. Officers rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Based on a complaint lodged by Neha’s father, police have registered a case against her husband Vivek and her mother-in-law Meena. Investigations are also under way against six other members of the husband’s family in connection with the alleged dowry harassment.
Police officials said preliminary inquiries support allegations of sustained mental cruelty linked to dowry demands. Further investigation is under progress to establish individual roles and collect additional evidence.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and once again highlighted the persistent menace of dowry-related harassment and deaths, despite strict laws meant to curb the social evil.
