A police constable was arrested for allegedly trespassing into a woman’s house in Royapettah and attempting to sexually assault her while in uniform. The incident created a stir, following which the Chennai City Police Commissioner ordered his suspension.
Surya, 28, a native of Mettur in Salem district, is serving as a constable at the Icehouse Police Station in Chennai. Police said he has been living separately from his wife due to personal differences.
According to officials, Surya allegedly entered the house of a 32-year-old woman in the Royapettah area on Thursday evening while wearing his police uniform.
The woman was alone at the time. It is alleged that he attempted to sexually assault her.
The woman reportedly locked him inside the house and raised an alarm. Neighbours gathered at the spot and alerted the police control room.
Police personnel rushed to the scene, opened the door and arrested Surya. Officials said he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The Icehouse police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
The incident gained attention on social media, prompting Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun to order a detailed inquiry. Following the investigation, it was confirmed that the constable had violated the law, and the Commissioner ordered his suspension on Friday.
During questioning, Surya reportedly claimed that he had gone to the house to inquire about alleged illegal liquor sales.
However, police officials said the investigation revealed that he had attempted to sexually assault the woman, leading to disciplinary and legal action against him.
