In a move aimed at resolving complaints over the collection of an additional ₹10 deposit on liquor bottles and addressing the shortage of change at liquor outlets, the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) has decided to introduce automated bottle return machines at its retail outlets.
The scheme was launched on a trial basis today at a TASMAC outlet in Egmore, Chennai.
Under the system, customers must bring back their empty liquor bottles and first scan the label affixed to the bottle using the machine. Once the label is successfully verified, the bottle can be deposited into the machine.
After the bottle is accepted, the consumer will instantly receive the ₹10 incentive amount as a digital refund through the automated system, according to officials.
The pilot project has received an encouraging response from customers in Egmore. Following the positive feedback, TASMAC plans to expand the initiative to all its retail outlets across Tamil Nadu in the near future.
