A fresh wave of tension has emerged within the AIADMK after party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expelled senior leader and former minister K.A. Sengottaiyan from the party.
The move followed Sengottaiyan’s recent appearance alongside former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam (OPS), V.K. Sasikala, and T.T.V. Dhinakaran at the 118th Jayanti and Guru Puja of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar held in Pasumpon village, Ramanathapuram district.
According to reports, Sengottaiyan travelled with O. Panneerselvam from Madurai to Pasumpon to attend the event, where the trio — OPS, Dhinakaran, and Sengottaiyan — jointly paid floral tributes at Thevar’s memorial.
Later, the leaders also met Sasikala, marking a rare reunion of the AIADMK’s estranged figures. The visuals of their meeting sparked widespread discussion in the Tamil Nadu political arena. Responding swiftly, Edappadi Palaniswami announced Sengottaiyan’s expulsion from the AIADMK, citing disciplinary reasons. Following his removal, a banner at Sengottaiyan’s party office in Gobichettipalayam, his home constituency in Erode district, drew attention after the image of EPS was found covered.
The act has been widely discussed among AIADMK cadres as a symbolic reaction to the expulsion.
Speaking to reporters in Gobi, Sengottaiyan said he would clarify his stand on the issue. “I will explain everything about my removal from the party’s basic membership at 11 a.m. at Kullampalayam Estate,” he said. The developments indicate renewed political realignment possibilities among expelled AIADMK leaders, even as EPS continues to assert control over the party’s organization.
