DMK leader E.V. Velu questioned whether the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Government would refrain from registering cases against anyone in the name of maintaining law and order.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had announced under Rule 110 that cases registered against teachers, farmers and social activists who had fought for democratic rights would be withdrawn.
Speaking on behalf of the DMK, E.V. Velu said the withdrawal of cases against farmers and teachers had not previously been announced under Rule 110. He also questioned the reference to the “previous government”, saying it appeared to have been made with an intention and could lead to a debate.
Velu said registering cases as part of measures to maintain law and order had been a longstanding practice. He questioned whether the present government would henceforth refrain from registering cases against anyone through the police.
He also asked whether there was no need to take action to maintain law and order under the present government and referred to issues relating to land acquisition for SIPCOT projects.
Speaker J.C.T. Prabhakar clarified that nothing had been done contrary to Rule 110 and said the Chief Minister could make announcements on any matter under the rule.
