A farmer was killed on the spot after his two-wheeler was hit by a car belonging to Tiruvaiyaru DMK MLA and Thanjavur Central District Secretary Durai Chandrasekaran near Orathanadu in Thanjavur district on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Govindaraj (65), a resident of Thennamanadu near Orathanadu.
He was engaged in farming in his native village. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, who is working abroad.
According to police, Govindaraj was riding his two-wheeler to his agricultural land when the car of the MLA, which was travelling from Orathanadu towards Thanjavur, collided with the vehicle. Govindaraj sustained severe injuries in the impact and died on the spot.
On receiving information, Orathanadu police rushed to the scene, recovered the body and sent it to the Orathanadu Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The police seized the MLA’s car and parked it at the Orathanadu police station.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and further investigation is under way to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the fatal accident.
