Members of the Keezhbavani Farmers’ Association, led by its president C. Nallasamy, Sudantararasu and E.V.K. Shanmugam, submitted a petition to the Keezhbavani Water Resources Department (WRD) Superintending Engineer at Gobi, who was present at the Collectorate, seeking the immediate release of 3 TMC of water for 15 days to save standing crops in 1.035 lakh acres.
The farmers urged the authorities to draw water from the hydel power plant reservoirs in the Nilgiris district and release it through the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) system.
They said the LBP dam has more than 13 TMC of water and that an immediate release was essential to protect the standing crops in the command area.
They appealed to the Water Resources Department to take urgent steps to release the required quantity of water for 15 days, citing the critical condition of the crops.
