In a rare and astonishing medical case, doctors at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi, have discovered a fetus growing inside the stomach of a newborn baby in Karnataka’s Dharwad district.
According to hospital sources, a woman from Kundgol taluk in Dharwad district was admitted to KIMS Hubballi for her second delivery. She gave birth to a baby boy on September 23. Soon after birth, doctors noticed the infant’s abdomen appeared unusually swollen.
Following a detailed medical examination, doctors were shocked to find that a fetus was developing inside the baby’s stomach. The medical team immediately conducted an MRI scan to study the condition further.
Dr. Eshwar Hasabi, Medical Officer at KIMS Hospital, said, “It has been revealed that a fetus with a spine is growing inside the newborn’s abdomen. We have completed the MRI scan, and once the report is reviewed, the next course of treatment will be decided. This is an extremely rare occurrence.”
Doctors identified the condition as “Fetus in fetu”, a rare congenital anomaly that occurs in about one in 500,000 live births, where a malformed twin is found inside the body of its sibling.
The newborn is currently under close observation at KIMS Hubballi, and doctors are expected to plan a surgery after receiving the MRI report.
