Goods worth several lakhs of rupees were damaged in a fire that broke out at a packing and ironing unit in Tiruppur on Sunday morning.Police said the unit, operated by Dhananjayan, a native of Bihar residing in the Valayankadu area, functions on the second floor of a two-storey building in Lakshmi Nagar. More than ten workers are employed at the facility.
After completing work on Saturday night, the workers locked the premises and left for their homes. On Sunday morning, residents noticed thick black smoke emerging from the building, which soon turned into a major fire. On receiving information, personnel from the Tiruppur North Fire and Rescue Services rushed to the spot and battled the flames for more than an hour before bringing the fire under control.
However, a large quantity of materials, including knitwear garments, cotton boxes and poly bags, were destroyed in the blaze. The loss is estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
Tiruppur North police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine whether the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit or any other reason.
