Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister of State E. M. Sudarsana Natchiappan passed away at his residence in Sivagangai on Thursday following health complications. He was 78.
Natchiappan hailed from Eriyur in Sivagangai district. A lawyer by profession, he practised in the Supreme Court and later pursued research at Madurai Kamaraj University.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sivagangai constituency in 1999 and served as a Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu from 2004 to 2016. He also held several positions in the Congress party.
Natchiappan served as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry in the Manmohan Singh government from June 2013 to May 2014.
He also served on several parliamentary committees and was associated with human rights initiatives. He had represented India at the United Nations General Assembly.
His mortal remains will be kept for public homage. Political leaders and Congress functionaries have expressed condolences over his death.
