Founder’s Vision Remembered as Stanes AIHSS Marks 163rd Year

The 163rd Founder’s Day of Stanes Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School (AIHSS), Coimbatore, was celebrated with great pride and reverence on Saturday. The event brought together members of the school community to pay tribute to its illustrious founder, Sir Robert Stanes, whose vision and values continue to guide the institution.

Prof. Victor Anandkumar, Dean of International Relations at Pondicherry University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The celebration was presided over by Mrs. Mercy Oommen, Chairperson of Stanes Schools, along with Mr. Philip R. J. Fowler, Correspondent; Dr. James Gnanadoss, Honorary Treasurer; Dr. Sucheeta Ramachandran, Governing Board Member; and Mr. P. A. John Stephen, Principal of Stanes AIHSS.

The day began with the Founder’s Day Service led by Rev. Dr. Sanjeev Sugu, Member of the Governing Board, setting a solemn and reflective tone.

In his keynote address, Prof. Anandkumar highlighted the enduring legacy of Stanes Schools, commending the dedication of teachers who devote themselves wholeheartedly to nurturing young minds. He spoke about the importance of trust and collaboration between parents and teachers, underscoring how educators often perceive and understand the potential of students in ways others might not.

He emphasized the need for parents to create nurturing home environments that balance love and discipline, encouraging children to grow with confidence rather than pressure. Acknowledging the tireless efforts of teachers, he remarked that they are the true force propelling the school forward—those who teach not merely to earn a living, but to make a lasting difference in the lives of their students.

Prof. Anandkumar also lauded the alumni who attended the celebration, describing them as the torchbearers of the Stanes legacy and role models for current students. Addressing the students, he urged them to aim high, reminding them that Stanes serves as their launchpad to reach greater heights in life.

Earlier, Principal John Stephen welcomed the gathering and reflected on the life and contributions of Sir Robert Stanes—an industrialist, philanthropist, and visionary whose ideals continue to inspire the school’s pursuit of excellence. He noted that the celebration was not merely a tribute, but also an occasion to reaffirm the school’s commitment to uphold the founder’s mission and values.

As part of the ceremony, long-serving staff members who had completed 25 years of service were honored with Special Service Awards, while academic achievers were felicitated for their accomplishments.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. V. Divakaran, Vice Principal of the Senior School.
