Police have arrested four members of the same family in connection with the sensational theft of 87 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the residence of former DMK MP A.K.S. Vijayan in Tanjore.
A.K.S. Vijayan is a native of Siddhamalli village in Tiruvarur district. He currently serves as the State Secretary of the DMK Farmers Wing and is also the Special Representative of the Tamil Nadu Government in New Delhi.
On November 28, burglars broke open a bureau at his house located at Sekaran Nagar near the New Bus Stand in Tanjore, and decamped with 87 sovereigns of jewellery. Based on a complaint, the Tamil University Police registered a case and formed six special teams to investigate the theft.
During the investigation, police traced the crime to a family residing at Royal Nagar in Dharmapuri district. Acting swiftly, a police team went to Dharmapuri on Monday and brought the suspects to Tanjore for questioning.
The arrested persons have been identified as Sadiq Badshah (33), Moideen (37), their sister Ayesha Parveen (30), and their mother Fatima Rasool (54), children and wife of Mohammed Yusuf. After interrogation, all four were formally arrested, and the entire 87 sovereigns of stolen jewellery were recovered.
Further investigation is underway to find out whether the accused were involved in other similar theft cases.
