Gaganyaan Unmanned Mission in December

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan, who is also the Secretary of the Department of Space, arrived in Coimbatore by flight today to participate in a private function. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore airport, he provided key updates on the progress of India’s prestigious Gaganyaan project.

Dr. Narayanan said that the mission, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, is advancing steadily, with 85% of the required tests already completed. “We are preparing to launch an unmanned spacecraft in December this year, which will carry Vyommitra, a humanoid robot developed to simulate human activities in space. Following this, two additional unmanned test missions will be conducted before the final stage,” he explained.

He confirmed that India’s first human spaceflight is scheduled for March 2027, noting that safety protocols are being rigorously tested. “We are also focusing on how to safely return astronauts in case of an emergency. Alongside ISRO, the Indian Air Force, Navy, and several other institutions are actively collaborating on this mission,” he added.

Speaking proudly about India’s space milestones, Dr. Narayanan highlighted that the country ranks first globally in nine categories, possesses the best camera technology for lunar exploration, and is the only nation to reach Mars successfully on its maiden attempt. He also said that 55% of applications received by ISRO are from ordinary citizens, reflecting the increasing interest of students and the public in space science.

The ISRO chief further underlined the growing role of artificial intelligence in space exploration. “AI-powered robotics are being integrated into Chandrayaan-4 as well as Vyommitra, ensuring advanced efficiency and safety for future missions,” he said, reaffirming India’s rapid progress in rocket engineering and space technology.
