Coimbatore City Police Commissioner V. Saravana Sundar has confirmed that the young woman and her boyfriend involved in the recent gang rape case in Coimbatore are not guilty of any wrongdoing and have been treated as victims in the investigation.
Addressing reporters, the Commissioner said police have arrested three men — Satish (30) and Karthi (21) from Sivaganga district, and Guna (20) from Madurai — in connection with the case. All three have previous criminal records, including charges of murder and vehicle theft.
“The brutal incident occurred behind the Coimbatore airport. Seven special teams were formed to probe the case from multiple angles. More than 300 CCTV clips were reviewed, and the accused were arrested last night after they attempted to flee. They were shot in the legs during the operation,” he said.
He added that the trio, who were drunk at the time of the crime, had stolen a two-wheeler from a locked house in Kovilpalayam before committing the assault. “They were armed with machetes. The victim is now stable and receiving psychological counselling. No case has been registered against her or her companion,” he clarified.
The Commissioner said action is being taken to book the accused under the Goondas Act. “We are verifying whether they are part of a larger mercenary gang. The crime scene was located behind a wall and covered with bushes, which caused a slight delay in locating the victim. Police reached the spot within 15 minutes after receiving her call,” he explained. Urging the public and media to avoid spreading personal or unverified remarks about the victim, Saravana Sundar said over 100 police personnel were involved in the operation. “The liquor bar near the crime scene was closed two years ago. Allegations that police were hesitant to act due to the presence of weapons are false,” he clarified.
The Commissioner also said a case has been registered against BJP members for conducting a torch protest without permission. He concluded by urging the public to ensure their CCTV cameras remain functional and to make use of the Kavalan App, launched by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, which provides immediate police assistance in emergencies.
